How to Age Furniture
BeforeAfter

To achieve the worn aged look follow these easy steps.

  1. Prepare the surface to paint.
If the existing paint is latex-based you may proceed with the undercoat.
If it is painted with an oil-based paint you must prime it with a stain stopping primer before you can begin.
  2. Choose the colors you want for your finished piece, one for the undercoat that will show through and one for the final top coat.
  3. Paint the undercoat, one or two coats, let dry completely.
  4. Using a block of paraffin wax rub it in the places you want the undercoat color to show through the topcoat.
  5. Next, paint the top-coat, one or two coats as needed and let it dry completely.
  6. With a sanding block or a palm sander, sand over the topcoat to reveal the color below. You can sand lightly or heavy - it's your choice.
  7. If you want to deepen the color, you cam rub the piece with a stain (I like Minwax Stain color Early American).
  8. Let dry completely.
