How to Age Furniture

To achieve the worn aged look follow these easy steps.
- Prepare the surface to paint.
If the existing paint is latex-based you may proceed with the undercoat.
If it is painted with an oil-based paint you must prime it with a stain stopping primer before you can begin.
- Choose the colors you want for your finished piece, one for the undercoat that will show through and one for the final top coat.
- Paint the undercoat, one or two coats, let dry completely.
- Using a block of paraffin wax rub it in the places you want the undercoat color to show through the topcoat.
- Next, paint the top-coat, one or two coats as needed and let it dry completely.
- With a sanding block or a palm sander, sand over the topcoat to reveal the color below. You can sand lightly or heavy - it's your choice.
- If you want to deepen the color, you cam rub the piece with a stain (I like Minwax Stain color Early American).
- Let dry completely.
